House Republicans are meeting behind closed doors Wednesday morning with the aim of coalescing around a speaker candidate who can attract a majority vote in the full chamber. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), the Judiciary Committee chairman, are vying to succeed Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), whose ouster as speaker last week was led by hard-line conservatives. It’s unclear whether either Scalise or Jordan can attract enough support. A full House vote could come as early as Wednesday or slip later into the week.
