The 2024 Tony Awards are in the home stretch, and David Adjmi’s “Stereophonic” has scored five wins so far, including best play. “The Outsiders” notched an upset for best director of a musical, and Daniel Radcliffe won featured actor in a musical for “Merrily We Roll Along,”
The question remains: What will happen in the biggest categories? Will “Hell’s Kitchen,” the Alicia Keys musical based on her upbringing in New York, capture the night’s biggest prize, best musical? Will best play honors to go “Stereophonic,” which broke a Tonys record for most nominations by a play? “Hell’s Kitchen” and “Stereophonic” led nominations with 13 apiece heading into Sunday night’s ceremony, but Broadway’s biggest night had a long list of contenders, including a lot of Hollywood star power: Eddie Redmayne for “Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club,” Jessica Lange and Jim Parsons for “Mother Play,” Rachel McAdams for “Mary Jane,” Leslie Odom Jr. for “Purlie Victorious,” and Sarah Paulson and Corey Stoll for “Appropriate,” among others.
