A Journey Interrupted
EMS, who has lived in London for 14 years, embarked on a trip through Chile and Argentina, blending holiday celebrations with overdue time away from his day job. On his birthday, December 6, he met a fellow traveler at a Santiago bar—a woman whose presence, he says, felt “quietly extraordinary.” Their bond deepened as they explored cities together, from Viña del Mar to Mendoza, sharing laughter, late-night conversations, and plans for a New Year’s celebration.
But just as quickly as she appeared, she vanished—called away by a family emergency without so much as a farewell. Left with a lingering sense of incompletion, EMS canceled his plans and returned to Brazil early. On December 31, while waiting for his flight at Santiago’s Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport, he began writing “The Unwritten Goodbye.”
