Teyana Taylor wins Golden Globe, dedicates it to ‘brown sisters’

One battle is in the rearview for Teyana Taylor.

The multihyphenate entertainer has secured the Golden Globe for supporting actress in a motion picture for her performance as revolutionary Perfidia Beverly Hills in Paul Thomas Anderson’s black comedy ā€œOne Battle After Another.ā€

Taylor beat out Ariana Grande (ā€œWicked: For Goodā€), Amy Madigan (ā€œWeaponsā€), Emily Blunt (ā€œThe Smashing Machineā€) and ā€œSentimental Valueā€ stars Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas for the prize.

ā€œI almost didn’t even write a speech because I didn’t think I would [win],ā€ Taylor trailed off as she broke into tears onstage.

Taylor thanked God, her family and the ā€œOne Battleā€ crew for her honor.

ā€œMost importantly, to my brown sisters and little brown girls watching tonight,ā€ Taylor said, ā€œour softness is not a liability.ā€

ā€œOur light does not need permission to shine. We belong in every room we walk into. Our voices matter and our dream deserves space,ā€ she said.

Taylor was one of several ā€œOne Battleā€ cast members nominated for Globes this year, including three-time winner Leonardo Dicaprio and breakout star Chase Infiniti.

It’s her first Golden Globe nomination, despite receiving previous acting accolades for her performance in A.V. Rockwell’s 2023 drama ā€œA Thousand and One.ā€ She’s also found critical success in the music sphere, where she gained early prominence as a singer, dancer and choreographer.

When she made her way to the press room, Taylor was still buzzing from her win hours before, her smile taking over her entire face.

ā€œI’ve been doing this since I was 15 years old,ā€ Taylor said. ā€œAnd what this was, for me, was God reminding me that the wait is not punishment, it’s preparation for what’s already written.ā€

ā€œIf everything would have happened my way on my time,ā€ she added, ā€œI don’t even know if I would be standing up here. … I’m so happy that I stayed patient.ā€

In a recent interview with The Times, Taylor described her ā€œOne Battleā€ character as ā€œa woman who has showed up for everybody, the revolution, the French 75 and [her partner] Bob [DiCaprio], and it’s just kind of like, ā€˜Why do I have to sit and be this? Why do I have to play house?’ ā€

ā€œIt’s very seldom that you see a woman actually able to be selfish and show up for herself without the world going for her throat,ā€ the actor said.

Taylor added that Beverly Hills has served as a reminder to similarly ā€œstand up and remind myself of who I am.ā€
