World-renowned Buddhist nun, singer, and humanitarian Ani Choying Drolma is set to grace the Toronto Pavilion on Friday, May 30, 2025, with her powerful concert titled “Sound of Pure Joy.” Organized by Blue Xerion, this transformative event promises an evening of sacred music, meditation, and mindfulness — an immersive experience that speaks to the soul.
Widely celebrated as the “Rock Star Nun,” Ani Choying is known for her transformative performances that blend ancient Buddhist chants with modern musical elements. Her voice carries a rare serenity that transcends language and culture, evoking peace, compassion, and healing. Joining her on stage are Nepal’s most celebrated master musicians — Gopal Rasaily (guitar), Manose Singh (flute), Prince Nepali (sarangi), and Sanjay Kumar Shrestha (drums) — whose synergy creates a divine fusion of traditional Himalayan melodies and global soundscapes.
The Inspiring Life Story of the “Singing Nun”
Born in 1971 to a Tibetan refugee family in Kathmandu, Ani Choying endured a difficult childhood marked by domestic violence. At the age of 13, she joined Nagi Gompa, where she studied under Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche and began a deep spiritual and musical journey. Her exceptional chanting ability earned her respect as a spiritual vocalist within Buddhist circles.
In 1994, her music reached international audiences through a collaboration with American guitarist Steve Tibbetts, leading to her debut album Chö in 1997. Since then, Ani has performed on prestigious stages worldwide, including the Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Oslo. Her albums, such as Moments of Bliss, Inner Peace, and Selfless Love, continue to captivate listeners seeking music that nourishes the spirit.
A Voice for Social Change
Ani Choying is also a deeply committed humanitarian. She founded the Nuns’ Welfare Foundation in 1998, the Arya Tara School in 2000 to educate underprivileged girls, and the Arogya Foundation in 2010 to support kidney care in Nepal. Her music supports her mission. In 2014, she was named UNICEF Nepal’s first national goodwill ambassador.
Her autobiography, Singing for Freedom, has been translated into many languages, touching the hearts of readers across continents.
