Today, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) sought to downplay a potential criminal case related to a 2016 hush-money payment by Donald Trump, saying it involved “personal money” and shouldn’t be prosecuted under the statute of limitations. He made the comments at a retreat in Orlando, where House Republicans have been peppered with questions about a potential indictment of Trump, which could come in New York as early as this week. Trump would be the first former U.S. president to be indicted.
