Leadership Shifts: The Impact of Head Coach Changes on FAMU and NCAA Football Programs

In collegiate athletics, leadership changes can ripple through an entire program, influencing team performance, recruiting, and community morale. The Florida A&M University football team is experiencing a new transition as new head coach James Colzie III steps in to lead the Rattlers. This leadership shift reflects broader trends across NCAA football, where coaching changes have become increasingly common, driven by high stakes and a demand for immediate success.

Coaching turnover in NCAA football is at an all-time high, with the average tenure of head coaches decreasing from 4.3 years in 2010 to just 3.8 years in 2023, according to the NCAA’s most recent Division I Coaches Report (2023). As FAMU transitions to new leadership, the Rattlers are navigating the challenges of maintaining team momentum while adapting to a fresh strategic vision. This story explores the broader implications of such transitions, focusing on FAMU and other NCAA programs experiencing similar changes.

FAMU’s football team recently bid farewell to their former head coach, Willie Simmons who had a successful tenure marked by a conference championship and multiple postseason appearances. Now, the university has appointed James Colzie III, a dynamic leader known for his defensive strategies.

“The foundation here is strong, thanks to Coach Simmons. My goal is to build on that foundation while introducing strategies that enhance our competitiveness. It’s all about developing players on and off the field,” said Colzie III

Players have expressed mixed emotions about the transition. Meanwhile, first-year players are optimistic about the fresh approach. The new coach has already implemented changes, such as a more aggressive offensive playbook and a renewed focus on player development.

Senior defensive lineman James Ash stated, “It’s tough to adjust to new coaching styles, but we’re ready to build on what we’ve accomplished.”

Recruitment is one of the most sensitive aspects of a coaching change. Under Simmons, FAMU successfully recruited several top-tier players, landing a recruiting class in the top three of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). Maintaining this momentum is crucial for the program’s future.

Sara Vetter, a graduating senior said, “The energy on campus is electric this season. Coach Colzie brings a lot of excitement, and the players seem motivated. We’re all rooting for another positive season.”

Recruiting is a relationship-driven process. When a new coach comes in, maintaining those connections with high school athletes, their families, and coaches is critical. Early indications suggest Colzie actively engages recruits, makes campus visits, and uses social media to strengthen ties with prospects.

Despite these challenges of new head coaches experiencing adversity in their first year, FAMU’s football team has shown resilience and steady performance during the 2024 season, finishing with a 7-5 overall record and 5-3 in the SWAC conference. The team displayed discipline and determination while there were challenges, including adapting to new leadership and minor injuries during training camp and the season. Colzie emphasized fundamentals and maintained momentum from the prior season’s Celebration Bowl victory, contributing to the team’s competitiveness in a challenging conference.

Senior running back Kelvin Dean said, “We’re adapting to a new style, but the fundamentals remain the same. Coach Colzie focuses on player development, and that’s been huge for us seniors trying to leave a legacy for the younger guys.” Jamsari Gassett senior wide receiver also said, “Change can be challenging, but Coach Colzie brings a fresh energy that’s hard to ignore. His offensive strategies are designed to get the most out of players like me. It’s exciting to see how we are evolving as a team.”

The coaching carousel isn’t unique to FAMU. NCAA football programs across the country are grappling with increased turnover. In the past decade, programs like Auburn University, the University of Texas, and others have made high-profile coaching changes, often with significant financial implications.

The cost of hiring and firing coaches has escalated, with buyouts for departing coaches sometimes exceeding $10 million. In 2023, NCAA programs spent a combined $105 million on buyouts, up from $85 million in 2018, according to a report from USA Today Sports. For smaller programs like FAMU, financial constraints make hiring decisions even more critical.

Athletic Director Angela Suggs said, “We need a coach who can deliver results without straining the program’s budget. Our focus is on sustainable success.”

FAMU and other NCAA programs must create a balance between short-term success and long-term stability in their coaching decisions. For FAMU, the focus remains on competing for another SWAC championship while fostering a culture of resilience and adaptability.

“Coach Colzie’s vision for this program is clear. We’re focusing on a balanced offense that can adapt to any situation. It’s been a collaborative effort, and I think the results speak for themselves.” said Henry Burris – Co-Offensive Coordinator, FAMU

As the season progresses, the performance of FAMU under its new coach will serve as a case study of how leadership transitions influence collegiate sports. The Rattlers’ ability to navigate this change could set a standard for other programs in the SWAC and beyond.

The world of NCAA football is dynamic, and coaching changes are an inevitable part of the game. For FAMU, this transition marks an opportunity to build on past successes while adapting to new leadership. The Rattlers’ journey and trends across NCAA football underscores the complex interplay of performance, recruitment, and leadership in shaping the future of college sports.

Patrick Richard said, “The coaching change was surprising, but I think the team has handled it well. Coach Colzie seems like the right fit, and the players are buying into his vision. That’s all you can ask for as a supporter.”
