On a second ballot, House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy (Calif.) once again failed to gain sufficient votes to become House speaker, as GOP infighting over the speakership stretched into Tuesday afternoon.
McCarthy fell short despite a late push by Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), who won six votes in the first ballot, to urge his GOP colleagues to overlook differences within their own party and vote for McCarthy. After Jordan spoke, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), who had voted for Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) for House speaker on the first ballot, rose to say he was nominating Jordan.
