New Book by Alessio Zanei Uncovers the Untold Stories Behind Ferrari’s Iconic Supercar

When it comes to legendary cars, few have left as indelible a mark as the Ferrari F40. Celebrated as the final car personally approved by Enzo Ferrari, the F40 is an enduring symbol of raw, unfiltered automotive excellence. But what about this car continues to captivate both car enthusiasts and those who may not know a turbocharger from a carburetor? In F40: A Journey Discovering the Legend, author Alessio Zanei unravels this mystery, taking readers on an exhilarating exploration into the heart of one of history’s greatest supercars.

In this exclusive interview, Alessio shares insights into the making of his book, which blends Ferrari’s artistry with deep engineering analysis. We’ll delve into his passion for the F40, the meticulous research and exclusive collaborations that brought the book to life, and how he captures the essence of driving such a thrilling machine. Prepare to immerse yourself in the legend of the F40, as seen through the eyes of an engineer who understands the science and soul of this iconic masterpiece.

Interviewer: Hi, Alessio. Can I start by asking you why you think the F40 has such enduring appeal, even among non-car enthusiasts?

Alessio Zanei: Beauty is often said to lie in the eye of the beholder, but at the pinnacle of any craft—whether architecture, painting, sculpture, or motoring—there is a rare consensus. A group of enthusiasts might endlessly debate the world’s most beautiful cars, yet only a few names can silence the room. The F40 is one such car. Its allure is not only in its breathtaking, uncompromising design but also in its story. Launched in 1987 to celebrate Ferrari’s 40th anniversary, it was the last car approved by Enzo Ferrari himself. That makes it more than just a car; it’s a living legend. Its status as the fastest road car ever produced at the time further solidified its place in automotive history.

Interviewer: Your background as an aerospace engineer has profoundly influenced your approach to writing this book. How did your expertise shape your study of the F40?

Alessio Zanei: As an aerospace engineer at the University of Pisa and Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies, I have always been fascinated by engineering. The Ferrari F40 represents a peak in automotive engineering, embodying the concept of speed without compromise. Its philosophy is closer to a race car than a road car. Engineers weren’t concerned about comfort or usability; the interiors were the most spartan ever since the racing beauties of the ’60s, and for an engineer, this was something to revere. My academic background helped me appreciate and analyze the car’s engineering on a profound level. It wasn’t just about admiring the aesthetics but understanding the mechanical genius behind every component. My technical study of the engine, in particular, became a passion project that ultimately shaped this book.

Interviewer: You mentioned that creating this book was a deeply collaborative process. Can you tell us more about how working with DK Engineering and Joe Macari enhanced the project?

Alessio Zanei: The creation of this book would not have been possible without the invaluable support of industry giants. DK Engineering, renowned as the world’s premier Ferrari restorers, granted me unparalleled access to their remarkable collection of F40 models, along with their technical expertise. Their team offered me insights into the restoration and maintenance of these cars, details that the average enthusiast rarely gets to see. Likewise, Joe Macari, one of London’s top Ferrari dealers, whose showroom houses over €200 million of vehicles, contributed exclusive images enriching the book. These stunning visuals of F40 restoration projects are exceptional and reveal details not typically captured in books. The collaboration with these legends lent authority and authenticity to the project, making it a unique resource for anyone passionate about the F40.

Interviewer: What makes this book stand out from other tributes to the Ferrari F40?

Alessio Zanei: What distinguishes this book from other F40 tributes is its rich collection of exclusive content and the depth of its explanations. It includes rare, unpublished interviews from Pininfarina’s archives, offering new insights and untold stories that even die-hard enthusiasts may not have heard before. Additionally, thanks to my collaboration with DK Engineering and Joe Macari, the book features stunning images of F40 restoration projects, highlighting intricate details typical sources overlook. However, the most unique aspect is the engineering focus. While there are chapters dedicated to personal experiences and the sheer emotional impact of the F40, other sections dive deep into the technical side. I explored the design and mechanical choices that made the F40 a masterpiece. It’s a book for anyone who appreciates cars and the artistry and engineering behind them.

Interviewer: Your book also covers the driving experience of the F40. How do you convey something so visceral to readers who may never get to drive one themselves?

Alessio Zanei: The book’s section is dedicated to the driving experience. I wanted to capture every nuance of what it feels like to stand before and drive this iconic machine. The F40 isn’t just a car you drive; it’s a car that engages all your senses. The moment you hear the roar of the twin-turbo V8, it sends shivers down your spine. The handling is raw and demanding—no electronic assistance will save you if you make a mistake. I describe the thrill, the intensity, and the symphony of sounds as vividly as possible. For those who may never have the opportunity to drive an F40, my goal was to make them feel as if they were experiencing it through the pages, standing in awe before a masterpiece of engineering and art.
