Tory Lanez, the rapper who is serving time for shooting Megan Thee Stallion in 2020, was hospitalized Monday morning after he was stabbed by another inmate in a California prison.

Lanez, legal name Daystar Peterson, is in stable condition after the inmate stabbed him with a self-made shank in a prison yard, a law enforcement source told The Times. The attack occurred around 7:20 a.m. in a housing unit at the California Correctional Institute in Tehachapi, and prison staff “immediately responded, activated 911 and began medical aid” to Peterson, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation spokesperson Pedro Calderón Michel said in a statement. Peterson was rushed by ambulance to a nearby hospital.

An Instagram account ascribed to Lanez said the rapper was stabbed 14 times, including seven wounds to his back, two to the back of his head and one to his face. The post said he suffered a collapsed lung in the attack but was breathing on his own and “in good spirits and deeply thankful to God that he is pulling through.”

The California Correctional Institute and the Kern County district attorney’s office are investigating the incident, the statement said. The Office of the Inspector General was also notified of the attack. The motivation for the stabbing remains unclear, according to TMZ which broke the news.

A legal representative for Peterson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The 32-year-old Canadian musician was sentenced to 10 years in state prison in August 2023 for gun charges stemming from the 2020 incident in which he shot the Grammy-winning “Savage” artist (legal name Megan Pete) in the feet. Peterson was convicted in December 2022 of assault with a firearm, illegal possession of a firearm and negligent discharge of a gun.

Peterson, who rose to popularity in the late 2000s, continues to face legal heat from Pete even behind bars. The “Hiss” musician filed a restraining order request in December 2024 against Peterson, alleging he has continued his “campaign of harassment” via online trolls and bloggers attacking her credibility and spreading defamatory statements.

A Los Angeles judge granted that request in January and extended Pete’s restraining order against Peterson until 2030.
