President Biden on Wednesday designated Colorado’s Camp Hale as a national monument — the first of his administration — saying the World War II-era military site is a key piece of the country’s history and the state’s national beauty.
The grounds, which extend to more than 50,000 acres, are home to “soaring peaks and steep canyons, black bears, bald eagles, moose, mountain lions, waterfalls, pristine rivers, alpine lakes, a scant descent of wildflowers at the right time of the year, and a stunning backdrop of ski slopes and iconic trails,” Biden said.
